Fee Structure

My Personal Message Regarding Fees:
I am aware that seeing a Spinal Surgeon is expensive! The reality is that many Spinal conditions do not require surgery. If you are concerned about the cost it is vital to discuss with your GP the options available to you, and the need for a surgical opinion. I am in regular contact with many of my referring doctors and can provide advice easily via email or phone to your GP or specialist. For patients who are not privately insured I consult in the Public Hospital system at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (Adult Spine) and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Adult Spine), and a referral can be sent to these hospitals from your GP

Please be aware that I do not currently charge gaps for operative surgical and percutaneous procedures including epidural injections, facet denervation and discography covered under your Private Health, Worker Compensation or DVA coverage.

For consultations, my fees are based on recommended rates provided by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) of which I am a member. When it was introduced in 1984 the Medicare rebate covered 85 per cent of AMA fees but the government has tried to contain health costs by failing to index the rebate to inflation. Unfortunately this results in out of pocket expenses for this part of your care. There is a partial medicare rebate for all outpatient consultations and these are detailed below but this is not covered by your Private Health provider, although may be covered by Workcover or DVA.

Patients with an accepted Workcover claim may have an initial specialist assessment with Dr Catherine Cartwright, Dr Simon Sandler or another Orthopaedic or Rehabilitation specialist. I do not routinely accept initial Workcover referrals, however, if your general practioner believes you need urgent surgical attention please ask them to discuss your case with me. My personal assistant will be happy to discuss any costs with you.
I do not perform medico-legal assessments, third party claims, or percentage impairment reports.
